AMD will acquire Fei-Fei Li’s World Labs for $8.2B

AMD is acquiring World Labs, one of the leading developers of deep learning models intended to understand physical reality, in an $8.2 billion deal. World Labs justified the deal by stating that AI development requires close collaboration across model research, systems, and compute, while AMD noted the acquisition will shape its chip-making roadmap. Under the acquisition, World Labs founder Fei-Fei Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist. Li, a Stanford computer science professor and pioneer in computer vision, founded World Labs in 2024 to develop deep learning models with a robust understanding of the physical world. Li described the partnership as a result of a desire to scale World Labs' technical breakthroughs beyond the lab and get closer to the hardware. The acquisition is expected to help AMD compete more effectively in the advancing AI hardware landscape.
