Anthropic releases Sonnet 5.5, a faster and more cost-effective work partner

As the AI model wars intensify, Anthropic has released the newest version of Sonnet, its mid-tier model. The company states that Sonnet 5.5 will work much faster and at a significantly lower cost than its predecessor. Described as an ideal assistant for everyday tasks such as coding and document creation, Sonnet 5.5 is 30% faster than Sonnet 5 and features a significantly slower token burn rate. Anthropic’s benchmarks indicate that Sonnet 5.5 outperforms Opus 5.5 in agentic coding, likely due to its ability to spawn multiple agents without exceeding cost limits. The model also boasts significant cyber capabilities, comparable to Opus 5. Consequently, Anthropic is subjecting Sonnet 5.5 to the same cyber safeguards applied to its Fable and Opus models. Additionally, the company plans to release a new version of Haiku, its smallest model, in the coming weeks.
