OpenAI forms math advisory group as its AI resolves more than 100 open problems

OpenAI has announced the formation of an independent "Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence" hosted at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. The group aims to provide mathematicians with a voice in the company's research, following the AI's success in solving over 100 open mathematical problems, including the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize problem. The initiative follows an open letter from 25 Fields Medal-winning mathematicians who expressed concerns that AI labs are threatening intellectual work through rapid, competitive research. While the advisory group will offer independent perspectives, both OpenAI and the Institute clarified that the group will not have the authority to slow down or redirect the company's internal mathematical progress.
