ChatGPT to face tougher regulation in the EU

The European Union has officially designated ChatGPT as a “Very Large Online Search Engine” under the Digital Services Act (DSA), placing OpenAI under strict oversight regarding the risks AI poses to minors, user mental health, and the spread of illegal content. Reddit and Roblox were also designated as “Very Large Online Platforms” under the same framework. These regulations restrict platforms from targeting ads to minors or utilizing sensitive data such as sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity, or political beliefs. Furthermore, the companies must provide increased transparency regarding their recommendation algorithms. These rules apply to platforms with at least 45 million average monthly users in the EU, and the companies have until the end of December 2026 to ensure full compliance.
