Florida seeks to ban ChatGPT from mimicking human attributes

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier is calling for a judge to block OpenAI from "giving ChatGPT false human attributes," following a lawsuit filed by the state over safety concerns. According to Uthmeier, ChatGPT’s use of language, including first-person pronouns and outputs that mimic emotion, deceptively suggests to users that it is a trustworthy "friend." He argues that this mimicry lulls users into a false sense of security to increase engagement and contribute to OpenAI’s training data, potentially making the tool less trustworthy. The legal filing also requests that the court prevent OpenAI from developing new models without "third-party approved safety guardrails," citing recent security incidents and alarms raised by researchers. In response, OpenAI spokesperson Drew Pusateri stated that the company is committed to working with governments on robust safety standards, noting that OpenAI has recently paused training its most capable models until additional safeguards are in place.
