California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a package of seven bills aimed at curbing the environmental impact and financial burden of the state's burgeoning AI data center industry. The new legislation is designed to prevent these energy and water-intensive facilities from shifting their substantial utility costs onto California residents, a concern previously highlighted by the Los Angeles Times. Central to the new laws is a mandate for the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to establish a distinct rate classification specifically for data centers. This move ensures that these facilities are charged appropriately for their high consumption.
